What is Success in the School of Engineering and Computer Science?
According to Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, success is "the favorable or prosperous termination of anything attempted; the attainment of a proposed object; prosperous issue." In the School of Engineering & Computer Science at baylor University, we also feel that in addition to this, success is determining that for which you have been designed. We are committed to helping you attain this success, but you must also be a willing and active participant!
You have selected a major in engineering and/or computer science (ECS). This puts you in a very exclusive company! OF the incoming students at Baylor University, only 5-6% are admitted to one of these majors.
Why is this?
ECS is hard
There will b e times (for example, at 3am when you are trying desperately to find the millionth bug in a program due at 8am) when you will doubt your choice to be an ECS major. You will have friends (in other majors) who will not be working as hard you must, who will have free time (what is that?), who will invited you to go out with them when you have a final project due. Since there are not as many of you as there are in some other majors, you will not have the luxury of picking between sections of some of your classes because there is only one section available and it's at 8am in the morning!
There are keys to success in higher education that few know about or speak about. These "keys" can completely alter the way you view education while also enhancing your satisfaction with your higher education experience.
So what is the secret? What are the keys that will make the difference between a fulfilling experience or an empty one?
In his book, Making the Most of College, Harvard professor Richard Light finds that "those students who make connections between what goes on inside and outside the classroom report a more satisfying college experience."
Interacting with faculty outside the lecture setting and talking/studying with peers about academics in your living room can make the difference!
But what good does knowing the keys to success do if you can't apply them? Baylor's School of Engineering & Computer Science has created its own Living-Learning Center for this very purpose!
