Baylor Engineering Student Won 1st Place at Destination Imagination Global Finals 2005
Aug. 25, 2005
Destination ImagiNation, a community-based, school-friendly program, builds participants' creativity, problem solving, and teamwork in enjoyable and meaningful ways. Teams of five to seven members work together to apply creativity, critical thinking and their particular talents to solve a Team Challenge. There are five competitive Team Challenges from which teams may choose, each with its own educational focus. Each Team Challenge is designed to be open-ended and solvable in many ways and on many levels.
Alan Lamb, senior Classics and Mechanical Engineering double-major, and Michelle Alvarez, sophomore biochemistry and pre-medical double-major, comprised the Baylor Creative Problem Solving Team. They won 1st place in the structural design and architectural category. In 30 minutes, they had to create a vehicle to solve a problem presented to them from a random drawing out of a hat. Additionally, Lamb and Alvarez created a skit that centered on their problem solution. The competition combined technical and dramatic skills. The competition took place at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 25-28, 2005.
About the competition, Lamb said, "It was a little nerve-wracking to head into the competition with only two members, while most teams had 5 or 6. I got even more worried when I got some food poisoning the day of the competition, but we [Michelle and I] grit our teeth and bore straight into it."
