ECS Summer Bridge Program
Baylor > ECS > ECS > Prospective > Summer Bridge Program

The ECS Bridge Program is a great opportunity to begin your transition to Baylor, and I hope you have already begun thinking about your upcoming college experience. Are you nervous about taking college courses? Do you wonder what the faculty will be like? Would you like to get settled at Baylor before other freshmen? With these and other questions in mind, the School of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) invites you to attend the second annual ECS Bridge Program. This program is especially recommended to all students below a 1200 SAT and 25 ACT for student success purposes in the engineering and computer science field, but is an excellent program for ALL ECS students.

This program seeks to give engineering, computer science, and bioinformatics students the opportunity to come to campus during the summer before their freshmen year in order to get a head start on college. Each student will be assigned a mentor from our Paul L. Foster Success Center, attend weekly study skill workshops, and be exposed to key individuals and resources on campus that foster success.

For additional questions concerning the Bridge Program, please email Adam_Ecklund@baylor.edu or call 254-710-3890.

Checklist for those attending the ECS Bridge Program.

1.Complete the math placement exam during summer orientation in June or earlier. I must take the exam if my SAT math score is < 550 or an ACT < 24; if I do not score a 19 or better on the exam, then I will have to take a College Algebra course at a community college before attending the Vanguard Program. If I have an SAT of 550-600 or ACT of 24-28, then I may enroll in pre cal without taking the exam. If I have an SAT of > 690 or Act > 33, I may enroll in Cal I without taking the exam.

2.After conferring with Adam P. Ecklund, the Director of ECS Student Initiatives in the School of Engineering and Computer Science, I will attend the second summer session at Baylor prior to the fall semester and complete 6 hours of two freshman level academic courses for six hours of credit (3 hrs. Math/ 3 hrs. Religion).

NOTE: Complete the 2008-2009 FAFSA as soon as possible for priority consideration for a Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, work-study, and/or loans for the summer. FAFSA results usually take 7-10 days to reach Baylor from the federal processor, but financial settlement is required when you register for classes. www.fafsa.ed.gov

3.Enroll in and complete at least 12 semester hours of credit in the fall and spring semester, including the fall section of the college transition course EDC 1200 College Reading and Study Skills. An instructor-issued waiver will be required to be admitted to this section.

5. Meet twice weekly for one hour during the second summer session with the entire ECS Bridge group to help monitor academic progress, refine study strategies and time management skills, and encourage successful adjustment to college life and academics.

6. Complete any additional requirements as determined by the Academic Support Programs staff—such as meeting with tutors in the Writing Center, attending Supplemental Instruction sessions and special workshops, and utilizing any other services offered by the University.
