Dr. Kenneth Q. Carlile, co-chair of The Carlile Companies and co-owner of Camterra Resources, Inc., earned a BA from Baylor (’69) and a DDS from Baylor College of Dentistry (’73). He then earned a BA and an MS in petroleum geology from Centenary College and a PhD in geology from Baylor (’96). He is a certified petroleum geologist working in the field for more than 42 years.

He was appointed by several governors as commissioner of the Texas Department of Commerce and Tourism and later as chair of the Department of Commerce, appointed to the Texas Commission of Arts, and served as vice-chair and then as Texas representative to Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission.

The Carliles’ philanthropy to Baylor includes support for the Geology Research Center; Ken and Celia Carlile Atrium, Baylor Sciences Building; Packard Lecture Hall, physics; Carlile Endowed Scholarship Fund; Dr. Harold Beaver/Dr. Bill Brown Applied Petroleum Studies Lab; Tom Goforth Lab; Paul Marchand Geo Chemistry Lab; and the Carlile Equestrian Building. He served as campaign chair for the Sesquicentennial Campaign. He was selected as a Distinguished Alumnus (2003), has received the W.R. White Meritorious Service Award, and has given his time to groups such as the Baylor Foundation, the Baylor College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Board, and the Geology Advisory Board. 

Celia, his wife, serves in various community organizations and received the Alumna Honoris Causa award in 1992. The Carliles have received the Herbert H. Reynolds Award for Exemplary Services and the James Huckins and Pat Neff Medallions. They are members of First United Methodist Church in Marshall.
