Bargainer Faculty Excellence Awards
The purpose of the Bargainer Endowed Faculty Award Fund is to recognize faculty who demonstrate excellence in the School of Engineering and Computer Science in areas such as undergraduate teaching, graduate teaching, and research or scholarship. The Distinguished Research Award recognizes a faculty member for their exceptional research/scholarship.
Eligible faculty are from all academic ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Lecturer, or Clinical Professor in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. Each Department will nominate one individual for this award. The Chair will present their Department's nominee to the Academic Council in January for recipient selection. It is recommended that the Academic Council choose one recipient from each Department. Nominated individuals must have a minimum of three years at Baylor University. Emphasis will be on research/scholarship accomplished while at Baylor University. Individuals selected for this award will not be eligible for re-nomination for a period of four years after the year of selection. Nomination packages will be evaluated based on research/scholarship, however, strong performance in other areas, such as service and teaching, is also expected. The following gives some indication of what might be required but is by no means exhaustive:
Research/Scholarship: The nominee will exhibit excellence in research/scholarship at the state, national, and international level. Successful nominees will demonstrate important influence in advancing knowledge in their field of study. Outstanding research contributions such as excellence in scholarly publications, lectures, inventions, patents, copyrights, licenses, success in research grants and contracts, graduate student training, research awards and/or involvement in professional societies should be highlighted.
The nomination package will be due electronically to the Dean's office by November 1. The nomination package will consist of:
- A nomination letter from the Department Head of not more than two pages
- Curriculum Vita of the Nominee
- Not more than four letters of support, at least one from a colleague familiar with the Nominee's accomplishments. The remaining letters may be from students. Letters should not be longer than two pages.
The individual selected will receive a certificate and a monetary award of up to $3,000 per award, depending on available funds. The award may be used for, but is not limited to, faculty support for professional development, travel to conferences, research equipment, and salary supplement.

Named in honor of the first dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science, Dr. James Bargainer, the Bargainer Endowed Faculty Award Fund recognizes faculty who demonstrate excellence in the School of Engineering and Computer Science in areas such as undergraduate teaching, graduate teaching, and research or scholarship.
A pioneering Baylor professor & administrator, Bargainer (1935-2022) taught and led at BU from 1979 to 1999. Bargainer earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Lamar University, a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University, and a PhD from The University of Texas in Austin. He married Joyce Bechtel on August 1, 1959.
In 1979, Bargainer became the director of The Institute of Engineering Science at Baylor. He guided the program for the next 20 years. Achievements included securing accreditation of several disciplines, one of which was the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 1986. He became the first Dean of Baylor’s School of Engineering and Computer Science in 1995.
After retiring in 1999, Jim and Joyce enjoyed traveling. Jim was a deacon at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco. Jim enjoyed serving others while participating in mission trips reconstructing houses and churches after hurricanes on the Texas gulf coast. He loved Baylor athletics, teaching the bible, and being with family.
