Baylor Hosts 2nd Annual Data Science Conference with Leadership from Endowed Chair

Baylor University hosted more than 125 attendees at the Southwest Data Science Conference (SDSC) on March 24, 2023. The purpose of the conference – in its second year at Hankamer Academic Center, home of Baylor’s Department of Computer Science – is to promote transdisciplinary interactions among data scientists from diverse fields.

With a growing number of presenters, the conference should continue to make a broader impact on the data science community, said general conference chair Henry Han, Ph.D., Endowed Professor of Data Science at Baylor’s School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Baylor University hosted more than 125 attendees at the Southwest Data Science Conference on March 24, 2023. The purpose of the conference – in its second year at Hankamer and Cashion Academic Center, – is to promote transdisciplinary interactions among data scientists from diverse fields.

With a growing number of presenters, the conference should continue to make a broader impact on the data science community, said general conference chair Henry Han, Ph.D., Endowed Professor of Data Science at Baylor’s School of Engineering and Computer Science.

“Our conference is an essential platform for data scientists across multiple fields, and this forum inspires new ideas, projects, and collaborations that advance the discipline of data science,” said Han, who worked to make the conference a success alongside the conference organizing committee, including chair Erich Baker, Ph.D., interim dean of Baylor’s School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Han expressed his excitement that the team was able to create a space where researchers, educators, and data science students from different fields could interact each other and share their knowledge. At the conference, held on the Baylor University campus in Waco, Texas, a variety of presenters from a number of subject areas were able to deliver and discuss original, unpublished, high-quality work.

This conference is a unique opportunity in which the data science community can “exchange ideas, inspire new perspectives, and establish meaningful collaborations,” Han said.

As he finishes his second year as an endowed chair at Baylor, Han said facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration in data science research at Baylor University can greatly enhance cross-functional interactions, while also promoting Baylor's reputation as a leading institution in data science research and education on a global scale.

Through conferences such as this one, Baylor is establishing that its R1 Research status is not just a title, but rather a genuine effort to further engage in larger research conversations happening all over the world.
